Historically the hanky code is a queer semiotic, that originated in San Francisco and was most popular in the 1970s. In the code, a color-coded handkerchief is used to indicate what a person was looking for sexually. When worn in the rear left pocket it indicated that the wearer was looking to top and the right pocket meant that the wearer was seeking to bottom.
